Vermont State Overview
US state, New England. It borders Canada to the north and the Federated States of New Hampshire along the Connecticut River to the east, Massachusetts to the south and New York to the West. Perhaps originally inhabited by the Iroquois and visited by the French explorer S. de Champlain in 1609, the first colonization of the Vermont by the French began at Fort S.te-Anne in 1666; the territory passed to the English in 1758; after various attempts to declare itself independent, frustrated by the opposition of the states of New York and New Hampshire which competed for possession, it was constituted into an independent republic in 1777 and on March 4, 1791 it became the 14th State of the Union; in 1803 the capital was established in Montpelier. During the civil war, Vermont remained loyal to the Union.
The capital city of Vermont is Montpelier. It is the smallest state capital in the United States, with a population of just 7,855 people (as of 2019). The city is located in central Vermont, approximately 45 miles northeast of Burlington and 80 miles south of Montreal. Founded in 1781, Montpelier is home to many historic buildings and landmarks such as the State House and Capitol Plaza. The city has a vibrant downtown district filled with shops, restaurants, art galleries and museums. There are also several outdoor recreational activities available including hiking trails, ski slopes and lakes for swimming and fishing.
