South Dakota State Overview

South Dakota is a largely rural state in the Great Plains region of the United States. It is bordered by North Dakota to the north, Minnesota and Iowa to the east, Nebraska to the south, and Wyoming and Montana to the west. South Dakota has a population of just over 870,000 and is known for its wide open spaces, rolling hills, and diverse wildlife. Agriculture is an important industry in South Dakota, with farming and ranching being a major economic driver. Tourism also plays an important role in the state’s economy with attractions such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Badlands National Park, Custer State Park, and Crazy Horse Memorial drawing millions of visitors each year.

Pierre is the capital of South Dakota. It is located in central South Dakota along the Missouri River and is the second smallest state capital in the United States. Pierre has a population of approximately 14,000 and is home to several historical sites, including the State Capitol building and Fort Pierre National Historic Landmark. There are also many outdoor activities to enjoy in Pierre, such as fishing, camping, hiking, and boating at nearby Lake Oahe.
