New Mexico State Overview
State of the US Confederation. The region was explored by the Spaniards since the late thirties of the sixteenth century, but the first colonial settlement took place only in 1598. With the Mexican declaration of independence (1821), it constituted a province of the new state, but the war with the states United led to the occupation of Santa Fe (1846) and annexation (1848). In 1850 the territory of NM was established (which included Colorado until 1861 and Arizona until 1863). During the Secession War he first sided with the Confederates (1861) and then with the Union (1862). It was formally admitted to the latter as a state in 1912.
Santa Fe is the capital city of New Mexico. It is located in the north-central part of the state and is known for its vibrant culture, art galleries, and unique cuisine. Santa Fe was founded in 1610 as the oldest capital city in the United States. The city has a rich history and culture, with many Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences. The downtown area has many historic buildings, including the Palace of Governors which was built in 1610 and served as the seat of government until 1846. There are also two UNESCO World Heritage sites located here: Pueblo de Taos and Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Santa Fe is also known for its art galleries, museums, restaurants, festivals, live music venues, shopping districts, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
