Maine State Overview

Federated state of the United States of America, it is the northernmost of the states of New England. After various ephemeral attempts at French and English colonization at the beginning of the century. 17th, the territory between the Merrimac and Kennebec rivers was ceded by the New England government to Sir Ferdinand Gorges, the famous “father of American colonization”. His grandson, William, obtained from King Charles I (1639) a first charter of rights for Gorgeana (the od. York), which became the first capital of Maine. In the meantime, numerous other colonization centers had sprung up in the region, including Portland and Scarboro: all of which were then destroyed by the Indians in 1675. Two years later the territory was therefore absorbed, by acquisition, by Massachusetts, which in 1691 obtained legal recognition as “Royal province of Massachusetts Bay” including, in addition to Maine, also Sagadahoc, Plymouth and Acadia in a single vast colony of the Crown. But the separatist movement asserted itself during the war of 1812 among the colonists of Maine, which in 1820 became part of the Union as an independent state; and the Secession War (1861-65) saw its active participation, alongside the feds, with over 70,000 men.

The capital city of Maine is Augusta. It is located in the south-central part of the state on the Kennebec River. With a population of 19,000, Augusta is the second-largest city in Maine and serves as a regional hub for business, industry, health care, and government. The city offers a variety of cultural attractions such as the Maine State Museum, Fort Western Historic Site, and Old Fort Western. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy such as fishing and canoeing on nearby lakes and rivers or hiking trails in nearby state parks.
